QUALIFICATION FOR CERTIFICATE TO PRACTICE


For an applicant to be qualified to practice, such a person must have undergone Community Health training in one of the accredited Community Health training institutions and passed the qualifying National Examination as a Junior Community Health Extension Worker (JCHEW) or Community Health Extension Worker (CHEW) or Community Health Officer (CHO). Such a person so registered is entitled to affix letter RCHP after his/her names.

The Community Health Practitioners Registration Board of Nigeria is a statutory regulatory Board under the Federal Ministry of Health. It was established by Decree Number 61 of 1992, now CAP C 19, Laws ofthe Federation of Nigeria, 2004.

In pursuance of its statutory obligations and functions as clearly stated in Part 1, Section 1 a of the Community Health Practitioners (Registration, etc) Act, the Board is charged with the duty of "determining what standards of knowledge and skills are to be attained by persons seeking to become members of the profession of Community Health and improving those standards from time to time as circumstances may permit." So far, about 178, 215 Practitioners made up of Community Health Officers (CHOs), Community Health Extension Workers (CHEWs) and Junior Community Health Extension Workers (JCHEWs), have been trained since 1979.

The Board has determined that standards of practice of Community Health must continue to improve and has found Continuing Professional Development (CPD), as a veritable means of improving these standards. To this end, Board has approved (CPD) Programme to improve, renew and update the skills and ability of all registered Practitioners to ensure that appropriate and high quality health services are rendered to patients and all members of the community.

In making sure that this aim is achieved, Board wishes to invite interested Continuous Professional Development (CPD) Providers in carrying out such 'training on regular basis. .

Eligibility For Appointment as CPD

The following institutions and organizations are eligible to organize' Continuing Professional Development programmes;

  1. Community Health Practitioners Registration Board of Nigeria.
  2. Approved Community Health Practitioners Training Institutions.
  3. Accredited Teaching and Specialist Hospitals with Community Health Departments.
  4. Accredited State Central/General Hospitals with Community Health Departments.
  5. Accredited Voluntary Agencies and Private Hospitals,
  6. National Association of Community Health Practitioners of Nigeria.
  7. National Primary Health Care DevelopmentAgency.
  8. State Primary Health Care DevelopmentAgencies/Boards.
  9. Accredited Professional Societies and Bodies.
  10. Accredited Overseas Professional Societies and Institutions.
  11. Any other Institution or Organisation that may be approved by the Board from time to time.

Fees for registration as a CPD provider:

  1. Application form (Admin Charge) - N20,000
  2. Accreditation fee - N250,000
  3. Registration fee (for three years) - 50,000
  4. Re-accreditation - 250,000

Continuing Professional Development Providers are to note that the fees may change from time to time as determined by the Board. Application forms can be obtained from the headquarters (see address @ bottom right).
